The after-school program at Roy Wilkins Family Center has been in existence for over 30 years. We serve Elementary students in grades K-5 [5 to 10 years old] and Middle School students in 6th–8th grades [10 to 14 years old].
We are open Monday to Friday, from 3pm to 6pm. Our population consists of 80 Elementary and 50 Middle School students from various Feeder Schools throughout the Southeast Queens Community.
We provide Leadership Skills, STEAM Enrichment, Literacy Enrichment, and Healthy Living and Physical Activities. These components ensure that our youth are fully engaged in productive and constructive ways that support their academic success, which affords children and youth opportunities to practice new skills through project-based, hands-on experiential learning. Our methods support children in building on school content and creating enthusiasm, persistence, and curiosity by connecting what they learn during the school day; we work to connect that knowledge in a new way.
Our goal is to ignite a passion for learning in a way that students can assimilate and build connections that strengthen their confidence and enhance learning, without compromising the traditional model of teaching. Our progressive model promotes a learning pattern that develops work habits and forward-thinking.
